Variety with the retrograde inscription on the obverse. Wide flan. This specimen has seen little circulation and has a lovely patina. Rare. Superb.
The Royal Abbey of Chelles, situated on the River Marne, dates back to the 6th century when Queen Clotilde, widow of Clovis, decided to found a small convent there to live in seclusion. The monastery quickly became one of the centres of royal power under the Merovingians. In particular, it housed the royal archives and treasures. Chilperic was assassinated there in 584. The abbey’s prosperity continued under the Carolingians, and a Romanesque basilica was built at the end of the 8th century by Abbess Gisèle, sister of Charlemagne.
