Philip VI (1328–1350). Golden lion, undated (1338).
Obverse: °PH’: DEI: GRA° – °FRANC: REX. The king seated in a Gothic throne with a canopy, holding a long and a short sceptre, his feet resting on a recumbent lion.
Reverse: + :XP’C: VINCIT: XP’C: REGNAT: XP’C IMPERAT. A quatrefoil cross, leafy and fleur-de-lis-adorned, within a trefoil quatrefoil flanked by four small crowns.
Dy.250 – Fr.265; Gold – 30 mm – 3 h
NGC MS 61 (6458806-001).
Well centred with a crisp strike. A few minor scratches on the field and slight, even wear. Beautiful golden patina. Superb.
