Description
FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL Philip VI (1328–1350). Gold angel, 2nd issue, Notre-Dame (1341). Obverse: PHILIPPVS: D’ – GRA: FRAC: REX. The Archangel Saint Michael standing beneath a canopy forming the top of a polylobe cut off at the bottom, crowned, holding a long-shafted cross resting on the head of a dragon lying at his feet, and the shield of France with three lilies. Reverse: + XPC: VINCIT: XPC: REGNAT: XPC: IMPERAT. A four-lobed cross, leafy and fleur-de-lis-adorned, within a four-lobed fleur-de-lis field flanked by four small crowns. Dy.255A - Fr.273; Gold - 6.33 g - 32 mm - 9 h NGC MS 61 (8772184-002). A fine blank and strike, with sharp relief, from the second issue alone, struck between August 1341 and June 1342! With a slight golden patina. Superb.
