Description
FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL Philip VI (1328–1350). Quadruple piéfort of the denier (or obol?) parisis, 2nd type, 2nd issue ND (1346). Obverse (at 12 o’clock) + PHILIIPVS· REX. In the field, FRA / NCO in two lines, between two small rings. Reverse (at 12 o’clock) PARISIVS· CIVIS. A cross pattée flanked by a small ring (besant?) at 2 o’clock. L. cf. 277a – Dy. cf. 275A; Billon – 4.12 g – 16.5 mm – 1 h With PHILIIPVS. Corresponds to the second issue of the second-type Parisis denarius, which, for the first time, features legends beginning at the top with a small cross, and ‘FRA NCO’ with upright letters. The 16.5 mm diameter may also suggest a piéfort (octuple) of the obol of the same type, known from the Marchéville 667 specimen. Extremely rare, if not unique. TTB.
