John II the Good (1350–1364). Gold royal, 1st issue, undated (1358).
Obverse: IOHANNES: DEI G - RA: FRANCO REX. The King standing beneath a Gothic canopy, crowned, holding the sceptre.
Reverse: + XP’C: VINCIT: XP’C: REGNAT: XP’C: IMPER. A fleur-de-lis and leafy cross, curved into a heart shape (with a fleur-de-lis), flanked by four lilies, within a polylobed field.

This is the extremely rare first issue from August 1358 to April 1359, featuring ‘IOHANNES’ and ‘REX’ on the obverse. Beautifully styled, with a detailed portrait of the King and a cross pendant on his chest. Slight wear on the border at 5 o’clock on the reverse. Beautiful golden patina. Superb.
