Description
FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL John II the Good (1350–1364). Franc on horseback, Notre Dame (1360). Obverse: IOHANNES: DEI: GRACIA: FRANCORV: REX. The king on horseback, galloping to the left, sword raised, wearing a crowned helmet surmounted by a fleur-de-lis, clad in a fleur-de-lis coat of arms over his chainmail; the horse’s caparison is decorated with fleur-de-lis. Reverse: + XPC* VINCIT* XPC* REGNAT* XPC* IMPERAT. A leafy cross with a quatrefoil in the centre, within a small angular quatrefoil, decorated with palmettes and flanked by four hollowed-out trefoils. Dy.294 - Fr.279; Gold - 3.88 g - 30 mm - 1 h NGC MS 61 (8769661-013). On a fine, barely tarnished blank. The strike is barely clovered. Slight wear and circulation marks. Attractive golden patina. Superb.
