Description
FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL Charles VI (1380–1422). Gold shield with a crown, 4th issue of the ‘ND’ series (after Sept. 1402–1411), Sainte-Menehould. Obv. + KAROLVS (x/+) DEIx GRACIAx FRANCORVMx REX. Crowned Shield of France. Rev. + XPC (x) VINCIT* XPC* REGNAT* XPC* INPERAT. A fleur-de-lis and leafy cross, with a star within a curvilinear heart-shaped lozenge, all within a quatrefoil flanked by four small crowns. Dy.369C - Fr.291 - Prieur, RN 1947, p.143, no. 4; Gold – 3.45 g – 28 mm – 2 h NGC MS 62 (6642217-001). With trident-shaped ‘T’s indicating the Sainte-Menehould mint. Punctuation by a crossbar on a small cross after the first word on the obverse, crossbar on the reverse after the first ‘XPC’. Two dotted circles on the obverse. The reverse design shows through slightly on the obverse. With a golden patina. Superb, mint condition.
