Charles VI (1380–1422). Golden lamb, 1st issue, undated (1417), Saint-Quentin.
Obverse + AGN: DEI: QVI: TOLL: PECAT: MVDI: MIS: NOBIS. Paschal lamb on the left, one of its forelegs raised, head turned to the right, in front of a trefoil cross with a banner that cuts across the exergue legend, within a beaded polylobe frame interrupted at the bottom; in the exergue: ·K·F - R·X·; with a faint ground line.
Reverse: + XPC* VINCIT* XPC* REGNAT* XPC* IMPERAT. A trefoil cross with leaves, bearing (workshop mark) in the centre, flanked by four lilies, all within an angled quadrilobe flanked by eight small lilies.

Top Pop: this is the only graded specimen! With a handwritten label reading “cat. Nicolay Nov. 1975 no. 430 et seq.” and another bearing the number “276” in pen.

For Saint-Quentin, featuring a 17th-century dot on both the obverse and reverse, a milled circle as the mint mark in the centre of the reverse, and the characteristic trident-shaped ‘T’s of this mint. The fineness reads 958 ‰, characteristic of the first issue of Charles VI, or of Charles VII (Dy.452) due to the ground line beneath the lamb. The blank is slightly irregular but close to its mint condition, with a beautiful golden patina. Rare. Superb in proof condition.
