Obv. (flair) KAROLVS: FRANCORV: REX. Shield of France (with a solid dot between the two upper flairs?).
Rev. (fleur-de-lis) SIT: NOME: DNI: BENEDICTV. Cross flanked by two small crowns and two fleurs-de-lis; solid dot beneath the lower arm.
Dy.- (possibly 377G) - L.-; Billon – 2.17 g and 2.3 g – 25 mm – 6 h
With two old handwritten labels: 7th issue “unreported” and 7th issue “unpublished”.
Unlisted issue with initial lilies: these white guenars correspond to the half-guenar of the 7th issue (Dy.378G – L.406a). The ‘O’s are round; there is a dot beneath the cross on the reverse, but the obverse does not show the (probable) dot between the lilies. Featuring a 16th-century ring on both the obverse and reverse, but probably minted in Paris: see Dieudonné, BnF, p. 192, nos. 1063–1065 (note). Extremely rare. The two examples: very good to very good-to-excellent condition.
Regarding this issue, also known in the ‘florette’ variant, Dieudonné states: “One might think that these ‘florettes’ belong to the workshops of Tournai and Saint-Quentin, but the evidence is so conclusive that one must admit there was an issue in Paris with an exceptional variant. Moreover, Tournai and Saint-Quentin would have the long ‘0’.”
