FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL Charles VII (1422–1461). Gold shield with crown, 1st type, 3rd issue, undated (1424), Mont-Saint-Michel. Obverse: +/* KAROLVSx DEIx GRACIAx FRANCORVM RE (mint mark). Crowned Shield of France. Reverse: +/* XP’C* VICIT* XP’C* REGNAT* XP’C* IMPERAT* (mint mark). A fleur-de-lis and leafy cross, with a star within a curvilinear heart-shaped lozenge, all within a quatrefoil flanked by four small crowns. Dy.453B - Fr.306; Gold - 3.35 g - 28 mm - 5 h Top Pop: this is the only graded specimen! From the YLT collection, CGB sale bry_524776, then the M. Héon collection [ateliersmonetairesnormands.org]. Specimen published in the October 2019 issue of the Bulletin de la Société Française de Numismatique: Jérôme Jambu.- A previously unpublished gold écus struck at Mont-Saint-Michel for King Charles VII. And the proposal to reattribute those from his regency to his reign. – pp. 289–296, fig. 3. PCGS MS63 (50545172). Featuring a capital ‘M’ on the obverse and ‘III’ with a ring below on the reverse: Mont-Saint-Michel mint. Long ‘0’s. A star beneath the initial crosses: 3rd issue. A tiny hole at 4 o’clock in the legend and a small chip on the edge at 2 o’clock. A vigorous and clear strike, with a slight lack of metal at 1 o’clock on the obverse and the reverse slightly off-centre. Beautiful golden patina. Unique and of museum interest! Superb in mint condition. In 2019, Jérôme Jambu published in the BSFN a reattribution of four examples of the Mont-Saint-Michel gold écus to the first issue of Charles VII, struck after January 1423. Our specimen, however, is unique and belongs to the third issue of Charles VII, authorised in August 1424. It was struck by the Mont-Saint-Michel mint, which thus managed to continue operations during the siege it endured between September 1424 and June 1425.
