Description
FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL Charles VIII (1483–1498). Gold shield beneath a sun; first issue, modified to feature scallop shells with the initials ‘ND’ (1494–1498), Dijon. Obverse (scallop shell) KAROLVS: DEI: GRA: FRANCORV: REX. Crowned coat of arms of France, beneath a sun. Rev. (scallop shell) XPS: VINCIT: XPS: REGNAT: XPS: IMP. Fleur-de-lis cross with a quatrefoil in the centre. Dy.575A - G.109 - Fr.318; Gold - 3.34 g - 27 mm - 3 h NGC AU 55 (8772189-020). For this mint, the shield, which is wider at the bottom, is described as ‘Spanish’ in shape. It features a 17th-century ring on the obverse and a 16th-century ring on the reverse. Shows even wear, with a golden patina. Very Good to Superb.
