Description
FRANCE / CAPETIANS – FRANCE / ROYAL François I (1515–1547). Gold shield bearing the Dauphiné sun, 5th type, 3rd issue, undated (1528–1538), Grenoble. Obverse: + FRANCISVS° DEI GRA° FRACORVM° REX° (variant). Field quartered with the arms of France and the Dauphiné; at the top, a sun. Reverse (pink) XPS° VINCIT° XPS° RENAT° XPS° INPERA. Fleur-de-lis cross with a quatrefoil in the centre, flanked by a dolphin and a crowned ‘F’. Dy.786 - G.327 - Fr.358; Gold - 3.36 g - 25 mm - 9 h NGC AU 55 (8769661-028). Bearing the ‘V’ mark of Pierre Vincent, after 1533. A rather rare type. Made from a relatively short blank; the strike is off-centre on the reverse. Almost Superb.
