Description
FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL François I (1515–1547). A gold shield under a sun, bearing the cross of Our Lady (1542–1545), Marseille (conjunction ‘et’). Obverse: °(different)° FRANCISCVS: D: G: FRANCORVM: REX°. Crowned Shield of France, beneath a sun; below (mint mark). Rev. (different)° XPS: VINCIT: XPS: REGNAT. XPS: IPERA°. A plain, reamed cross within a leafy polylobe. Dy.889 – G.340 – Sb.4878 (not found) – Fr.351; Gold – 3.39 g – 25.5 mm – 9 h NGC AU 58 (8769661-016). Featuring ‘IPERA’ on the reverse. Designed by master engraver André de Montagut (AM), with only 3,970 examples (including half-écus) issued between 1542 and 1545. Missing from the BnF collection. The dies differ from those of the specimen offered for sale in MDC 18 no. 666. Beautifully styled, with minimal circulation wear and a lovely golden patina. Superb.
