Henry III (1574–1589). Quarter-shield, cross with fleur-de-lis arms, face view, 1589, Compiègne.
Obverse: + HENRICVS. III. D. G. FRAN. ET. POL. R. (date). Fleur-de-lis cross with a cruciform finial at the centre.
Rev. SIT. NOMEN. DOMINI. BENEDICTVM. Crowned shield of France, flanked by II - II; below (mint mark).

No master’s or engraver’s mark; in a characteristic, somewhat crude style. A specimen of very fine quality on a slightly oblong blank. Superb.
By master Philippe de Fidelle (without a master’s mark), a burgher of the town, in the temporary workshop at Compiègne, intended to compete with Paris, which was in the hands of the League (also bearing the letter A). A special issue, struck using converted silver tableware supplied by the town’s governor, Charles de Humières. Striking began in the name of Henry III between May and August, then switched to the name of Henry IV from 15 September onwards.
