Charles X (1589–1594). Dozen, 2nd type, with a reverse featuring two small crowns and two lilies, overstamped with a lily in 1640 under Louis XIII 1595 [then 1640], Marseille (conjunction ‘and’).
Obv. (at 12 o’clock) + CAROLVS. X. D. G. FRANC. REX. (date). (variant). Crowned coat of arms of France flanked by two C’s; overminted with a fleur-de-lis in a chequered field.
Reverse (mint mark) SIT. NOMEN. DNI. BENEDICTVM. Notched cross, flanked by two fleurs-de-lis and two small crowns.

A very rare late issue for Marseille, which minted coins in the name of Charles X, King of the League, until 1596 (no issue found). With a dark patina. This ‘douzain’ was reused under Louis XIII to make a ‘quinzain’ after a fleur-de-lis was added. Very good condition.
