Henry IV (1589–1610). A dozen with two crowned Hs, 1st type, reverse with two lilies and two crowned Hs, variety with a notched cross (overstamped with a lily under Louis XIII) 1594 [then 1640], AM, Melun.
Obv. (at 6 o’clock) HENRICVS. IIII. D: G. FRANC. ET. NAVA. REX. Crowned coat of arms of France, flanked by two crowned H’s; overminted with a fleur-de-lis in a chequered field.
Reverse (at 12 o’clock) +: SIT. NOMEN. DNI. BENEDICT. (variant) :(date):. Notched cross, flanked by two lilies and two crowned H’s.

As regards the rare Melun mint, this type was not described until 1977, based on a specimen published in the BSFN. Our specimen, originally a ‘douzain’, was reused under Louis XIII to make a ‘quinzain’ following the addition of a fleur-de-lis. TTB.
