Henry IV (1589–1610). XX patards, Siege of Cambrai, emergency issue by Governor Jean de Montluc, 1st type (later) [15]9[5].
Obv. HENRICO - PROTECTORI. Crowned shield of France, flanked by the (date), on an oval flan with bevelled edges, with a fine reeded edge; hallmarks XX on the left, P on the right and the shield bearing the arms of Jean de Montluc below.
Reverse: Plain.

Our specimen is of very high weight, double that of known examples of this type (generally 14 to 15 g!). Appears to be a later re-strike made on a balance, with barely corroded dies. With a grey patina. Superb.
Cambrai rallied to Henry IV in 1594, but in August 1595 the Spanish laid siege to the town. The inhabitants opened the city gates to them, but the governor, Jean de Montluc, held out in the citadel until 7 October and had these coins struck as a matter of urgency, between August and October 1595. Cambrai did not return to French control until 1677, following a siege that saw King Louis XIV himself take part.
