Henry IV (1589–1610). XX patards, Siege of Cambrai, emergency issue by Governor Jean de Montluc [15]95, Cambrai.
Obv. HENRICO (clover) PROTECTORE. Crowned shield of France, flanked by the (date), within a round border; hallmarks XX on the left, P on the right and the shield bearing the arms of Jean de Montluc below.

On a bronze blank, cut with shears. With a brown patina. Very good condition.
Cambrai rallied to Henry IV in 1594, but in August 1595 the Spanish laid siege to the town. The inhabitants opened the city gates to them, but the governor, Jean de Montluc, held out in the citadel until 7 October and had these coins struck in haste, between August and October 1595. Cambrai would not return to French control until 1677, following a siege that saw King Louis XIV himself take part.
