Description
FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL Louis XIII (1610–1643). Half-écu in gold with a sun, 1st type 1634, B, Rouen. Obverse (at 6 o’clock) LVDOVICVS. XIII. Reverse: G (sun) FRAN. ET. NAVA. REX. Crowned coat of arms of France beneath a sun. Reverse: + CHRISTVS. REGNAT. VINCIT. ET. IMP (variant) (date). Fleur-de-lis cross with a ring, bearing (mint mark) in the centre. Dy.1283A - G.53 (recorded, ungraded) - Clairand 32001 (year missing) - Fr.399; Gold - 1.69 g - 21 mm - 2 h Top Pop: this is the only graded specimen! PCGS AU58 (56291940). The cross on the reverse shows through slightly on the obverse. The strike is slightly off-centre on the reverse. Retains its original lustre, with only a slight patina on the fields. Very rare, if not unique: this year is missing from the Rouen website and from the ‘Bible’ of royal coins published in 2023. Superb.
