Louis XIII (1610–1643). Quart d’écu, 1st type, minted by the Huguenots in 1628, H, La Rochelle.
Obverse (at 12 o’clock) LVDOVIC. XIII. Reverse: G. FRAN. ET. NAVA. REX (date). Fleur-de-lis cross, with a quatrefoil finial at the centre.
Reverse: SIT. NOMEN. DOMINI. BENEDICTVM. Crowned shield of France, flanked by II - II; in the exergue (mint mark).

Minted in haste on a notched blank; the strike is partially off-centre. In fine condition, with the fields barely rubbed. A rare issue, the last in this series. Superb.
Minted in the besieged city of La Rochelle, which appointed officers to oversee the minting, notably Arnaud de Montauban as master of the mint and Jacques Chabot, the city’s goldsmith, as engraver. Quarts and eighths of an écu were struck, as well as twelfths, all of which were below the required standard in both fineness and weight.
