FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL Louis XIV (1643–1715). Bareheaded Louis d’or, 1678, D, Lyon. Obv. LVD. XIIII. D. G (variant) – FR. ET. NAV. REX. Youthful head of the King facing right, bareheaded; below (variant) (date). Rev. .CHRS. – .REGN. – .VINC.– .IMP (variant). A cross formed of eight L’s joined back-to-back, each arm crowned, with (mint mark) within a heart-shaped circle, flanked by four lilies radiating from the centre. Dy.1428 – G.247 – Fr.423; Gold – 6.72 g – 23 mm – 6 o’clock With a small ring at the tip of the neck, in addition to the two ‘?’ marks. Vigorous striking has caused the blank to split at 12 o’clock.
