Obv. LVD. XIIII. D. G. (variant) - FR. ET. NAV. REX. Aged head of the King facing right, wearing a laurel-wreathed wig.
Rev. (mint mark). SIT. NOMEN. DOMINI (variant) BENEDICTVM. (date). Crowned Shield of France.
Dy.1436A – G.239 (missing) – Clairand 33017 (mint mark missing for this type!) – Fr.430; Gold – 3.34 g – 20.5 mm - 6 o’clock
Reformation on a Paris demi-louis (A), with a welcome reformation. Trace of a test strike at 4 o’clock on the reverse moulding and minimal rubbing on the lateral lily of the crown. Beautiful golden patina. Unprecedented date for this mint! Almost Superb.
The ‘with shield’ type was struck at Reims as a double louis in 1690 (no examples have been seen from other years), exclusively as reformed coins. The louis were struck in 1690, 1691, 1692 and 1693, both on new blanks (with known mint marks) and as re-mints (only the 1693 examples on new blanks—7,474 struck—have not been found). As for the demi-louis, all of which are reformed blanks, the year 1691 was already known (CDMA in 2022) and now 1692 has been confirmed with this previously unpublished specimen
