Louis XIV (1643–1715). Double louis d’or with four Ls, 1696, A, Paris.
Obv. LVD. XIIII. D. G. FR. ET. NAV. REX. Aged head of the King facing right, wearing a large laurel-wreathed wig; (date) below.
Rev. CHRS – REGN – VINC – IMP (variant). Cross formed of four crowned lilies, flanked by four Ls, (mint mark) within a heart-shaped circle.
Dy.1439A - G.260 - Fr.432; Gold - 13.43 g - 29 mm - 6 h
A rather welcome reissue, based on a 1690 double louis featuring the shield. Well centred and with a beautiful colour, showing golden highlights, on the original polish. Slight scratch mark on the obverse. Superb, in mint condition.
