FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL Louis XV (1715–1774). Louis d’or with two Ls, mint-state, period forgery with a forgery of the Lille die on the obverse: 1722, A, Paris. Obv. LUD. XV. D. G. FR. ET. NAV. REX (variant). Nude, laureate bust of the King facing right; (date) and (variant) below. Rev. (variant) CHRISTUS REGNAT. - .VINCIT IMPERAT. Two L’s back-to-back, beneath a crown, between three lilies arranged 2 and 1; (mint mark) in the exergue. Dy.cf. 1635 – G.cf. 337 – Fr.cf. 456; Gold – 26 mm – 6 h Top Pop (2): this is the finest graded specimen (certified as genuine by NGC)! NGC MS 64 (2183756-015). Contemporary forgery, crudely styled and struck using a die from a counterfeit ‘Louis de Lille’ coin on the obverse! The dies used are rusty. Flat spot on the hair on the obverse. Golden patina. Superb.
