Louis XV (1715–1774). Tenth-écu coin known as the ‘old head of Béarn’, 1773, cow, Pau.
Obv. LUD. XV. D. G. FR. - ET NA. RE. BD. Head of the King facing left, wearing a laurel wreath, the base of the neck draped. Signature R. FIL on the side of the neck; below (variant).
Rev. SIT NOMEN DOMINI - BENEDICTUM (variant) (date). Oval, crowned Shield of France, between two olive branches; below (mint mark).

NGC AU 58 (8772188-001).
This is the only year of issue for this Béarn variety (although the ‘3’ in the year seems to have been re-engraved over a ‘1’). The strike is only slightly off-centre. A lovely, almost anthracite patina. Superb.
