Louis XVI (1774–1792). Trial strike of the gold louis with palm branches and the small crown (and date above) 1774, A, Paris.
Obv. LUD. XVI. D. G. FR. – T NAV. REX. Bust of the King facing left, in an embroidered robe, wearing the Order of the Holy Spirit, with his hair tied at the nape of the neck with a ribbon. Signature DUVIV on the edge of the bust. Below (variant).
Rev. CHRS. REGN. VINC. IMPER (variant) (date). A crowned pelte of France, superimposed upon the sceptre and the hand of justice crossed in a saltire, the whole flanked by two palm leaves; below (mint mark).

NGC UNC DETAILS POLISHED (8769659-005).
An excellent strike, centred and even, with sharp relief. This specimen has seen very little handling, with a slight patina over the original lustre. However, the fields have been brushed, giving a uniform appearance. Extremely rare. Superb in proof condition.
As Louis XV had died on 10 May 1774, a proclamation dated 23 May ordered the issue of a new gold louis (with palm leaves) bearing the effigy of the new King. It was not until the arrival of the new Chief Engraver, B. Duvivier, on 21 August 1774 that the design was finalised. This trial coin therefore dates, at the earliest, from early September 1774. Whilst the obverse was retained, there are differences between the standard issue and this trial coin: the crown on the reverse is smaller, the year is placed above it, and the palm leaves are less abundant
