FRANCE / FEUDAL - FRANCE / FEUDAL Brittany, François II (1458–1488). Gold shield bearing a knight or a florin with a horseman, ND, R, Rennes. Obverse: +* FRANCISCVS* DEI* GRA* BRITONV* DVX* (mint)*. The Duke on horseback, galloping to the right, sword raised, clad in armour, wearing a helmet surmounted by the ducal crown, and shielded by a shield bearing three ermine spots arranged 2 and 1; the horse’s caparison is strewn with ermine spots. Reverse: +* DEVS* IN* ADIVTORIV* MEVM* IN* TANDE* (mint mark)*. A trefoil cross, with a quatrefoil at the centre, flanked by four ermine spots, within an angled quatrefoil. Dy.334 - Jéz.386a - Fr.96; Gold - 3.36 g - 27 mm - 5 h NGC UNC DETAILS CLEANED (8772188-008). The horse’s hind legs cut across the legend: attributed to François II. With BRITONV and ADIVTORIV. A beautifully struck specimen with very little circulation wear. Superb / Superb, near-mint condition.
