Convention (1792–1795). Medal, ‘The New French Era’, by Duvivier, Special Strike (SP) 1792, Paris.
Obverse: REPUBLIQUE UNE ET INDIVISIBLE. The Republic, wearing a helmet, seated on the left, holding a sceptre with the Cap of Liberty and a fasces, and leaning on an altar; in the exergue: NATION FRANÇAISE and the signature DUVIVIER.
Reverse. Beneath a zodiac, in seven lines: FRENCH ERA / BEGAN / AT THE AUTUMNAL EQUINOX. / 22 SEPT. 1792 / 9 HOURS 18 MIN. 30 SEC. / IN THE MORNING. / IN PARIS.

Special Strike (SP). In gilded bronze. Slight trace of a crack from the die on the obverse. Minimal hairline scratches in the fields. Superb in Proof condition.
At its first sitting on 21 September 1792, the Convention decreed the abolition of the monarchy in France. The following day, 22 September 1792, the Convention decreed that all public documents would bear the date ‘Year I of the French Republic’.
