First Empire / Napoleon I (1804–1814). Trial strike of the 100-franc gold module, in bronze, by Vassallo, burnished blank (PROOF) 1807, Genoa.
Obverse: NAPOLEON – EMPEREUR. Nude bust, three-quarter view to the right; signed VASSALLO.
Reverse: EMPIRE – FRANÇAIS. Crowned eagle with outspread wings to the left, perched on a thunderbolt, head to the right; below (date).

On a burnished (PROOF) blank. Variant with the signature ‘VASSALLO’. A few scratches on the bust, otherwise close to its original mint condition, with a shiny brown patina. Superb, in mint condition.
Vassallo’s trial coins were produced as part of a private initiative by the Genoa Mint following its reopening. Inscribed in French
with values in francs, these trial coins were intended for the national series. Several varieties exist. Gerolamo Vassallo (1773–1819) worked at the
Genoa Mint from 1797 and was appointed master engraver in 1800. In particular, he produced the dies for the coins of the Ligurian Republic
. In 1808, he was transferred to the Milan Mint, where he worked under the supervision of Luigi Manfredini (Forrer VI, p. 204)
