FRANCE - FRANCE Louis XVIII (1814–1824). 40-franc trial coin, 1815 competition, second reverse design, by Gatteaux 1815, A, Paris. Obverse: * LOUIS XVIII – KING OF FRANCE. Laureate bust facing right; below, the signature GATTEAUX and (date). Rev. (mint mark) *PIECE DE - 40 FRANCS* (rooster). Between two palm fronds, a triangular, crowned shield of France, with borders formed by the collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit. G.1088a v. – Maz. – (cf. 719) – VG. – (cf. 2424) – Théret/Taillard – (2041.c.COP); Bronzed pewter – 8.29 g – 26 mm – 12 h Made of bronzed pewter, with a smooth edge. With an orange-brown patina. Superb, mint condition.
