Louis XVIII (1814–1824). Hybrid trial coin in the 40-franc denomination, obverse from the one-sou trial coin and reverse from the 1817 40-franc coin, A, Paris.
Obverse: LOUIS XVIII – KING OF FRANCE. Bare head of Louis XVIII facing right, with ‘ESSAI’ below.
Rev. Crowned coat of arms of France, between two laurel branches, flanked by ‘40 – F’, with (variant) (date) (mint) below.

A later hybrid combination of the obverse of the ‘Un sou’ trial coin and the reverse of the standard type. 25 mm diameter. Minor dents and marks. With a dark patina. Very Good to Superb.
