Description
FRANCE - FRANCE Henri V (1820–1883). Set of three small medals in platinum, gold and silver, commemorating the birth of the Duke of Bordeaux, n.d. (1820), Paris (Degen, publisher). Obverse: HENRI C. F. M. DIEUDONNE DUKE OF BORDEAUX / 29 July. Nude bust facing left. Reverse: GIFT FROM HEAVEN / 1820. An anchor resting on a three-flowered lily, with a sprig of myrtle passing through its loop. BC.—see 74 (not listed in either platinum or gold); Platinum, gold and silver – 1.77 g; 1.28 g; 0.89 g – 9 mm – 12 h Top Pop: these are the only graded specimens! PCGS MS65, MS64 and MS65 (50536721, 50536722 and 50536723). With their original lustre, a few handling marks on the gold specimen and a grey patina with iridescent highlights on the silver one. Superb in Proof condition. Differs from the description by Bauquier and Cavalier in the inscription beneath the bust. An archival document reproduced by Bauquier and Cavalier, p. 86, indicates the number of medals struck to mark the birth of the Duke of Bordeaux between 19 September and 14 October 1820: without specifying the variants, this medal would have been struck in only a single copy in platinum, a single copy in gold and six copies in silver
