Description
FRANCE - FRANCE Second Empire / Napoleon III (1852–1870). Trial coin in the 20-réaux Spanish module (5 francs) by Barre, with obverse by Bouvet and embossed edge, Special Strike (SP) ND (1855), Paris. Obverse: NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR. Laureate head facing left; below, signature BOUVET F. Rev. REINA DE LAS ESPANAS. Between the columns, a crowned shield bearing the arms of Spain, with the Chain of the Golden Fleece; below, 20 Rs. G.732b = this specimen (2019, p.580) – Maz. cf. 1638b and 1738 – VG.3418 v.; Bronze – 37 mm – 6 h Top Pop: this is the only graded specimen! PCGS SP63BN (28732344). Edge inscription in relief: LEY PATRIA REY, with the obverse die from Mazard 1638b and the reverse die from Mazard 1738. Guilloteau describes this combination, albeit with a smooth edge. Also exists in silver (Chaponnière 2 no. 220). A trial strike by Barre for the Spanish 20-real coin, using a Bouvet obverse die. Close to its mint condition with a golden-brown patina. Superb in Proof condition.
