Description
FRANCE - FRANCE Second Empire / Napoleon III (1852–1870). 2-franc trial coin with laureate head, star variant, smooth edge, burnished blank (PROOF) 1868, E, Paris. Obverse: NAPOLEON III – EMPEREUR (mint mark). Laurel-wreathed head facing left, with the signature ‘BARRE’ below. Reverse: EMPIRE FRANÇAIS. Imperial coat of arms resting on a crowned mantling and surmounting the sceptre and the hand of justice, flanked by 2 - F; below (star) (date) (anchor). G.527 - Maz.1659 - VG.-; Silver – 9.98 g – 26.6 mm – 6 h NGC MS 61 (8772188-037). Special strike or burnished blank, with satin-finished reliefs. Minor knocks on the obverse above and in front of the neck, and on the reverse beneath the ‘R’ in ‘EMPIRE’. Minimal scratches on the reverse and a few hairline scratches in the fields. With a collector’s patina. Appears to be very rare for this year of issue. Superb in mint condition.
