FRANCE - FRANCE Second Empire / Napoleon III (1852–1870). Medal depicting the reception of the Ambassadors of the Kings of Siam at the Palace of Fontainebleau, by Alphée Dubois, 1861, Paris. Obverse: NAPOLEON III – EMPEROR. Laureate head facing right; below, signature ALPHÉE DUBOIS. Reverse: Scene of the reception of the Ambassadors of the Kings of Siam. In the exergue: RECEPTION OF THE AMBASSADORS OF THE KINGS OF SIAM AT THE PALACE OF FONTAINEBLEAU 27 JUNE 1861 and signature ALPHÉE DUBOIS. Divo.438; Silver – 217 g – 73 mm – 12 h Top Pop: this is the only graded specimen! NGC MS 62 (8772185-001). Original strike with ‘ARGENT’ (silver) hallmarks (bee). Minimal marks and scratches on the obverse, as well as minimal nicks on the rim. Beautiful patina from long-term collection. Superb. In the ballroom of the Palace of Fontainebleau, converted into a throne room, Napoleon III and Eugénie, accompanied by the Imperial Prince, watch as the Siamese advance, wearing pointed hats and long, flowing silk robes. The Ambassador, his young son and their entire entourage prostrate themselves and present Napoleon III with a gold cup, which is handed to him, and a small box containing a letter from the King of Siam.
