Obverse: RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. Head of the Republic facing right as Cérès, beneath a star, between a fasces and a branch; below, the signature L. MERLEY.
Reverse (variant): LIBERTE. EGALITE. FRATERNITE (variant). Within a wreath formed of an olive branch and an oak branch: 5 FRANCS and C. Below, (mint mark) and (date).

Burnished proof surface and deep cameo effect (DCAM). Tiny handling marks and hairline scratches in the fields. Almost Mint State.
For the 1889 issues, the archives are missing and the only information available is provided by E. Dewamin (vol. 2, p. 327 and note 4). The Monnaie de Paris’s participation in the 1889 Exhibition enabled A. Borrel to strike coin-like tokens in full view of the public, using a steam-powered balancier. Another coin press was on display, but the 1889 coins were certainly struck at the Monnaie de Paris and not at the Exhibition
