Obverse: RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. Head of the Republic facing left in the image of Ceres, beneath a star; below, the signature E. A. OUDINÉ. F.
Reverse: LIBERTE. EGALITE. FRATERNITE. Within a wreath formed of two branches: 2 FRANCS (date); below (variant) (mint) (variant).

Extremely rare, with only 100 specimens struck in proof finish. Only minimal signs of handling and a fine scratch on the bust. With a collector’s patina. Superb in Proof condition.
For the 1889 issues, the archives are missing and the only information available is provided by E. Dewamin (vol. 2, p. 327 and note 4). The Monnaie de Paris’s participation in the 1889 Exhibition enabled A. Borrel to strike coin-shaped tokens in full view of the public, using a steam-powered balancier. Another coin press was on display, but the 1889 coins were certainly struck at the Monnaie de Paris and not at the Exhibition itself.
