Description
FRANCE - FRANCE Third Republic (1870–1940). Medal, The Society of Friends of the French Medal by A. L. M. Charpentier, SAMF No. 193, 1901, Paris. Obverse: SOCIETE DES AMIS DE LA MEDAILLE FRANCAISE FONDEE LE 28 FEVRIER 1899. A nude woman, in profile to the left, leaning forward and writing on a tablet; signature ALMC in monogram. Reverse: Four nude men, half-length, at different stages of life, examining a medal; monogrammed signature ‘ALMC’. Maier 11; Bronze – 144 g – 67 mm – 12 h From the collection of Nicolas Maier. On the edge, hallmarks (horn) BRONZE (lizard) and number 193. Only 145 copies were struck in bronze and distributed to members of the Société des Amis de la Médaille Française. With a matt brown patina and tiny black spots. Superb, in mint condition. Medal commemorating the foundation of the Société des Amis de la Médaille Française. The date inscribed on the obverse indicates the date of the Society’s foundation, not the date of the medal’s creation, which was two years later.
