Third Republic (1870–1940). Plaque, Paris World’s Fair, school athletics competitions, by F. Vernon, 1900, Paris.
Obverse: REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. Victory, draped and crowned with a laurel wreath, soaring with outstretched wings above the River Seine and the buildings of the Universal Exhibition, holding in both hands a bundle of laurel branches, some of which are falling onto the city. Around the edge, an engraved inscription: PARIS / 1900 and EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE; signed F. VERNON.
Reverse: SCHOOL ATHLETICS COMPETITIONS. In an ancient stadium, with a temple in the background, on a plinth, a naked athlete, clad only in a veil, raising a laurel branch. A wreath of laurel and oak branches in a cartouche in the lower left-hand corner and the artist’s signature on the plinth.

Hallmark (horn) ARGENT on the edge. With a slight matt finish. The fields show only the slightest traces of wear. Superb, in mint condition.
