Description
FRANCE - FRANCE Third Republic (1870–1940). Medal, ‘Orpheus or Music’, by L. Coudray (undated, 1899), 1961, Paris. Obverse: Bust of Orpheus clutching his lyre to his chest. A laurel wreath adorns his dishevelled hair, which flows in the wind. His anguished face conveys the despair he feels at the death of Eurydice. Signed ‘L Coudray’ on the right. Reverse: Engraved inscription: DIRECTION GÉNÉRALE DES DOUANES ET DROITS INDIRECTS / JULES CHABANEL / CONTROLLER 1 JANUARY 1922 (...) CHIEF REGIONAL COLLECTOR 1 OCTOBER 1961. Maier 223 – MdP.M.44 (obverse); Silver – 769 g – 115 mm – 12 h With a display stand; Attributed to Jules Chabanel. Hallmark (horn) 1ARGENT. Large module! The reliefs are barely worn and it has a beautiful grey patina. Superb, in mint condition.
