Third Republic (1870–1940). Set of two medals (gold and silver), depicting President Émile Loubet’s visit to Lisbon in 1905, by A. Rego, 1905, Lisbon.
Obverse: EMILIO LOUBET PRESIDENTE DA REPUBLICA FRANCEZA. Bust facing left; signed A. REGO.
Reverse: SUA VISITA A LISBOA 1905. On a wreath, three coats of arms: those of the French Republic, Portugal and Lisbon, beneath a banner reading ‘EU VOS SAUDO’.
Gold and silver – 28.34 g and 13.55 g – 33 mm – 11 h
In the original blue velvet case inscribed: A / Mr EMILE LOUBET / PRESIDENT / OF THE FRENCH REPUBLIC.
Struck on matt blanks; the silver example has been barely cleaned. An extremely rare presentation set containing both medals, no doubt struck for King Carlos I or President Loubet himself. Superb, in mint condition.
French President Émile Loubet’s visit to Lisbon, from 27 to 29 October 1905, was a major diplomatic event aimed at strengthening the Franco-Portuguese alliance. Welcomed by King Carlos I, President Loubet undertook a series of official visits, notably to the Royal Palace, amidst great public and media enthusiasm.
