Description
FRANCE - FRANCE Third Republic (1870–1940). 25-centime trial coin, 1913 competition (not entered in the competition), by Grégoire, in silver-plated bronze, Special Strike (SP) ND (1913), Paris (Janvier and Duval). Obverse: REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE. Around the central round perforation: a radiant star at the top, an oak leaf on the left, ears of wheat on the right and an anvil below; on the left: ESSAI MONETAIRE; monogram signature ‘RG’. Rev. LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE. Seated allegory, facing forwards, leaning on the central round perforation and on a bundle of rods; she holds a sword, a palm frond and an olive branch; ‘25 Cent’ on the left and the signature ‘R. Grégoire’ on the right. GEM.70.2 – Maz. – (see 2145, nickel) – VG.4755; Silver-plated bronze – 25 mm – 6 h Top Pop (2): this is the finest graded specimen! PCGS SP64 (54192500). Special Strike (SP). René Grégoire’s signature is barely visible, but present (Mazard erroneously lists it as ‘unsigned’). A minor plating flaw on the reverse. With a lovely grey patina. Superb in Proof condition.
