GREAT BRITAIN Oliver Cromwell (1653–1658). 20-shilling broad coin, polished blank (PROOF) 1656, London. Obverse: OLIVAR. D. G. RP. ANG. SCO. ET HIB. & PRO. Laureate bust facing left. Reverse: PAX. QVÆRITVR. BELLO. (date). Crowned shield. S.3225 - N.2744 - KM.Pn25 - W&R.39 - Fr.273; Gold - 9.01 g - 29 mm - 6 h PCGS PR62 (49960430). Ribbed edge. Struck on a burnished proof blank with matt relief, and the portrait additionally featuring a dotted relief, as well as the coats of arms within the shield on the reverse. A few hairline scratches in the mirror-like fields, with fine scratches on the reverse, barely visible. Slightly off-centre strike. Orange and golden patina. Superb in mint condition. Following the Civil War, which ended with the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England. Seven years later, trial coins were produced featuring a portrait of Oliver Cromwell as king, wearing a laurel wreath on the obverse and the royal crown on the reverse, based on an engraving by Thomas Simon. The coin was struck on the mint press by Pierre Blondeau.
