GREAT BRITAIN Victoria (1837–1901). Penny, burnished blank (PROOF) 1878, London. Obverse: VICTORIA D: G: - BRITT: REG: F: D:. Laureate bust facing left. Reverse: ONE - PENNY. Helmeted Britannia, seated facing right, holding a trident in her left hand and resting her right hand on a shield bearing the kingdom’s coat of arms; behind her, a seascape with a lighthouse and a three-masted ship; in the exergue (date). S.3954 v. – KM.755 v.; Bronze – 30 mm – 12 h Top Pop: this is the only graded specimen! From the Kevin Tierney collection, Stack’s Bowers Galleries Sale 185, 7 August 2014, lot 1058. PCGS PR64RB (6486578). Burnished proof blank. Retains its original colour beneath a light, developing patina. Tiny black specks in the fields. A very rare year in proof quality! Superb in mint condition.
