GREAT BRITAIN George V (1910–1936). Gold medal bearing the effigy of Cicero, ‘Robert Peel’ Prize for Latin oratory, by W. Wyon, Special Strike (SP) [1826] 1914, London (Wyon). Obverse: M TVLLIVS CICERO. Bust of Cicero facing right; below, the signature W. WYON MINT. Reverse: Within a wreath formed of a palm frond and a laurel branch, inscriptions in eight lines: ELOQVENTIAE / LATINAE / PRAEMIVM - ANNVVM / ROBERTVS - PEEL / HARROVIENSIS / HARROVIENSIBVS / PROPOSVIT / A. S. MDCCCXXVI. British Museum 1865,0324.590 (silver); Gold – 55.6 g – 43 mm – 12 h Top Pop: this is the only graded specimen! With an engraving on the edge: R. C. MASTERMAN, 1914, and in its original red imitation-leather case by WYON 2 LANGHAM CHAMBERS LONDON. PCGS SP64 (60810492). Special Strike (SP) with matt relief on a mirror-finish field. Only very slight marks in the original velvet lining. Proof condition. Robert Peel (1788–1850) was a British statesman, serving as Prime Minister from 1834 to 1835 and from 1841 to 1846, amongst other terms. A former pupil of Harrow School, he excelled there in Latin and Greek. Founded in 1572, Harrow School has educated many prominent figures, including Winston Churchill and other Prime Ministers. Originally, the main subject taught was Latin and the only sport practised was archery.
