GREAT BRITAIN George V (1910–1936). Gold medal bearing the effigy of Ovid, ‘Joseph Jones’ Prize for Latin verse and elegy, by L. C. Wyon, proof-like finish [1862] 1926, London. Obverse: PUBLIUS OVIDIUS NASO / ELEGEIA FLEBILE CARMEN. Laureate bust of Ovid facing right; below, signature L. C. WYON F. Reverse: Beneath a wreath formed of two yew branches, tied at the top, an inscription in eight lines: HOC PRAEMIO / JOSEPHI JONES / NOMEN ET EXEMPLUM / HARROVIENSIBUS / COMMENDAT / NON SINE LACRYMIS / PATER SUPERSTES / OBIIT 1862. British Museum - ; Gold - 57.15 g - 46 mm - 12 h Top Pop: this is the only graded specimen! Comes with its original brown leather case. With an engraving on the edge: A. M. GOLDSCHMIDT, 1926. NGC MS 63 DPL (8769685-002). Deep proof-like finish with satin-finished relief. Fingerprints and a slight golden patina. Superb in mint condition. In 1863, Joseph Jones, Esq., established an annual prize, comprising a gold medal to be awarded for the best composition in Latin elegiac verse. This prize was established in memory of his son Joseph Jones, who died at Harrow on 25 September 1862 whilst serving as head prefect. Founded in 1572, Harrow School has been attended by many notable figures, including Winston Churchill and other Prime Ministers. Originally, the main subject taught was Latin and the only sport practised was archery.
