British occupation. 9-pound pierced flask (equivalent to 8 Mexican reales) (1811) on 1795 FM, Mexico then Guadeloupe.
Obv. CAROLUS. IIII. - DEI. GRATIA. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust, facing right; below (date); countermark G crowned.
Rev. .HISPAN. ET IND. REX. (mint). 8 R. (variant). Crowned shield, between two columns with the banner ‘PLVS – VLTRA’; countermark: a crowned ‘G’.

With central square pierced (through the reverse) and countermarks featuring a crowned G. Beautiful grey patina with bluish highlights on the reverse. TTB.
The British occupation of Guadeloupe in 1810 led to a monetary reform under a decree of 6 May 1811. 10,000 Spanish American piastres were pierced to be worth 9 colonial pounds, and the central square, or ‘moco’, was worth 1 pound 20 sous. The perforation is made on the reverse side of the piastres, which then becomes the obverse of the perforated gourdes (Jambu pp. 38–39). The hallmark featuring a crowned ‘G’ stands for Guadeloupe, or George III according to the English, or even for Gobert of Basse-Terre, the silversmith chosen for this work.
