Vandals, pseudo-imperial coinage. Solidus bearing the name of Valentinian III and a different Z ND (455–520), Rome?
Obv. D N PLA VALENTI - NIANVS P F AVG. Large bust wearing a diadem, laureate and clad in armour, facing right.
Rev. VICTORI - A AVGGG z / COMOB / R - M. The Emperor facing forwards, in military attire, wearing a helmet with three plumes, holding a victory figure in his left hand and a long cross in his right, his right foot resting on the head of a captive.

Distinctive bust with a large drape across the breastplate. Slight golden patina. Very Fine to Superb.
Of controversial attribution, probably to the Vandals, according to Wroth or the BMC. May have been struck under Genseric, following the sack of Rome in 455 which followed the assassination of Valentinian III by Petronius Maximus. Kent, in RIC X, attributes it to the Franks or Burgundians, an attribution previously rejected by Lacam. The mint remains undetermined; it imitates the Roman mint with ‘RM’, and the 7th workshop with a small ‘z’ at the end of the reverse
