ITALY Lucca (Republic of) (1369–1799). Shield (scudo) bearing St Martin, 1747, Lucca. Obverse: RESPUBLICA. – (clover) LUCENSIS (clover). On a crown formed of two palm fronds, a festooned shield bearing the crowned coat of arms of the Republic; below, (date). Reverse: SANCTUS - MARTINUS. Scene showing Saint Martin on horseback on the left, preparing to cut his cloak in two with his sword to give it to a beggar. MIR.237/7 - Bellesia 59 - Dav.1373; Silver - 43 mm - 6 h Top Pop: this is the finest graded specimen! PCGS MS63+ (38779132). With a slight grey patina on the fields and the original colour still visible around the reliefs. The strike is slightly off-centre on the obverse. Superb in Proof condition.
