Obv. .CLEMEN. VII. – .PONT. MAX. A shield bearing the coat of arms of the Supreme Pontiff surmounted by his attributes.
Rev. (at 12 o’clock) + SANC. PETRVS. - ALMA. ROMA. Saint Peter fishing in his boat on the left; (variant) in the exergue.

With the inscription ‘SANC’ on the reverse. A variant ‘F’ within a crescent for an unidentified master. In its original struck condition with a golden patina. Proof-like.
Clement VII (Giulio de’ Medici) was the patron of Benvenuto Cellini, who produced coin dies for him. “Benvenuto was commissioned to make the dies for the Mint of Rome, and never have finer coins been seen than those struck in that city at that time. Returning to Florence after the death of Clement [VII], he also produced dies for the Mint of that city bearing the effigy of Duke Alexander; these coins are so beautiful, and executed with such care, that some are preserved today—and rightly so, just as one preserves very fine ancient medals—for in this he surpassed even himself” (Vasari)
